Minutes to Fame
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Minutes to Fame (Traditional Chinese: 殘酷一叮) is a game show on Hong Kong's TVB Jade, modelled after Pop Idol and American Idol, and similar to America's Got Talent. On the show, contestants appear on stage and sing. Their objective is to remain on stage for as long as possible, before the hosts ring a bell and ask them to leave. For each second the contestant remains on stage, the contestant is given HK$100.
The show is hosted by Hacken Lee and Joey Leung. The slogan of this programme is "全城盡興,殘酷一叮!" (The whole city (Hong Kong) gets excited when the cruel bell is rung).
Unlike Pop Idol and American Idol, Minutes to Fame intends to be satirical and funny which was probably inspired by the performance of William Hung in American Idol.
The bell
The "cruel bell" refers to a popular urban legend that during an audition a judge would ring a bell if he finds the candidate unsuitable. Thus, ringing the bell signifies that the candidate is unsatisfactory in the audition performance.
Going global
- Starting from May 2005, primaries are not only held in Hong Kong, but also in Guangzhou, Macau, Toronto, Taipei, Shanghai, Singapore, etc.
- The European branch of TVB, TVB-S Europe, held a Minutes to Fame contest in Paris and Rotterdam on August 28, 2005 and August 29, 2005 respectively. The winner of both contests would proceed in a Minutes to Fame special later that year, where contestants from all over the world would compete.

Hi Kate, I try to translate some parts based on what I can remember. Hope my translation is ok.
I remember Hacken saying that he does not really fancy HK's education system as he feels that students should have the freedom to choose whatever they are interested to study. He thinks equipping students with fundamentals like language and Maths is enough and the rest should be up to their interest. So he is a bit worried about his kid studying in HK in the future. (Hacken is so cute, already thinking about his kid's future...he will be such a nice daddy:)
He also mentioned that there are also two sides to the coin. Last time, when he was less popular, he has more time for his family. Now with greater popularity, he has to sacrifice some personal time with family and his health is also affected. But he thinks he can overcome any trouble due to his optimistic character.
The reporter wrapped up the interview by saying that Hacken is actually a serious person when it comes to work even though he says he is more of the happy go lucky type. He will sometimes requests to answer the reporter's questions again if he feels unsatisfied with his first reply. The reporter is rather moved Hacken's attitude to work, and is also willing to give Hacken a second attempt at answering, rather than give him a "chan hou yat ding".
------
Well, regarding the part about being happy, Hacken said he always tries not to think about unhappy times. He is doing something of his interest, and this job enables him to support his family, hence he is grateful and contented that he's much luckier than many people. When it comes to friends and girlfriend, he does not have a formula for getting along with each other. If two persons feel comfortable, they will naturally get together-that's his belief.

In Response To: HOW LONG DID IT TAKE 4 HACKEN 2 WRITE 'HONG YUT' LYRICS?? (kate)
> that's the song u're talking about right? it's still 1
> of my favorite songs of his!! & the lyrics R so
> meaningful & inspiring!! did he win an award 4
> this song, btw?? i seem 2 remember reading somewhere
> that he never won an award 4 this song...can't believe
> that he never won an award 4 this great song!! also,
> hacken composed the music 4 'hong yut' too, right?
hacken revealed that the song was written under pretty desperate circumstances cos at that time he was filming the show for which this song is the theme and he had one day to finish writing the lyrics. by the time filming ended on that day, he realised that his car was the only one left in the carpark. everyone else had gone home. under such a situation, where he felt helpless and sorry for himself, the lyrics of this classic song was written, to comfort and encourage himself in a sense.
yeah...it is true that this song never won a major award despite its popularity in and beyond hk. that's cos that was the time hk showbiz was dominated by the 4 heavenly kings. this only goes to show the nature of hk showbiz and the irony of it. hence in previous awards, whenever hacken was asked bout his chances of winning, he would always use this example. that even such a classic song like hong yat did not win any award, so it doesn't mean that u are victorious just cos u won an award and it doesn't mean that u are a loser just cos u did not win one. (this was the year hacken thought he has the best chances of winning most pop male singer too but obviously it did not materialise and hence, this has helped hacken to remain grounded inspite of his popularity now.)
the melody i believe is composed by a japanese composer. it is definitely not by hacken.
hope this helps!

WHERE DOES THE SUCCESS OF LEFT LUN RIGHT LEE LIE?
The Left Lun Right Lee Concert series has ended, as well as this
group's collaboration. Reportedly the group has made over HK$20 million.
The success of Left Lun Right Lee has been surprising. Alan Tam Wing Lun
and Hacken Lee Hark Kun are not new comers. Alan rose to fame in the 80s
and once competed with Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing. Lee Hark Kun appeared on
the scene in the late 80s. His singing was great but he never rose to
stardom. He was a host on TVB and with the World Cup theme song his
popularity soared. His disks suddenly sold well.
Tam Wing Lun over the years has never mentioned retirement, but
before Left Lun Right Lee, he actually was in semi retirement. Once in
awhile he would release a disk for the fans. His sales have been steady,
but definitely quite far from the peak. Alan long ago has no more to ask
for and thus has publicly criticized new comers. The never say retire
attitude has brought him another peak in his career.
In his performance life, make another 20 million is no big deal.
According to those who know him, he likes to have fun, which is completely
different from the mentality of artists who have long retired from the
business. Long ago he has announced that he would no longer accept any
music award but he still stayed in the music scene, which proved that he
truly does not care. Alan has been successful to today and won more
thoroughly than most singers completely because of his personality.
The writer has said, continuous success in show business is not
due to talent but due to personality.
No one would disagree that Lee Hark Kun sings well. His disks
were once promoted as having "zero flaw". No one has said otherwise.
Inbetween he has experienced a difficult period. He could not
become a "Heavenly King" because of his personality. Lee Hark Kun quickly
rose when he first arrived. His disks sold well, which gave him a big
head. The hardest obstacle for an artist is not the first step to
success but how to reach breakthrough again after success.
Jacky Cheung Hok Yau can sing and act. Lee Hark Kun could only
stand still on his music career origin.
Later he joined TVB and started to demonstrate his humorous
hosting style. He has performed in several gag shows that had average
performance.
When TVB assigned him to host the World Cup, he merges with his
beloved sport of soccer. In addition with the help of his Star Soccer
team friends, his performance career again has reached breakthrough.
His disks have topped sales charts again. TVB again casts him
in television series. Alan lends a helping hand. forms Left Lun Right
Lee, and creates another miracle. Lee Hark Kun earlier lost due to his
personality. Today he wins again, also due to his personality.
He should thank Tam Wing Lun. After the "breakup", how will he
use today's personality to win even more? No one knows whether Lee Hark
Kun has thought clearly about that. - KWOK HIN CHING

1) the boss -- who wants to see sales figures
2) those who buy the cds -- must convince them that its worth their money ie those who have no particular idols but will buy good music
3) your fans -- they have to be happy with your songs
4) yourself -- ie he must enjoy the process of making the album or like the song
thanks! is this the news about hacken being shy

[this post was about how Hacken got really shy when he had to film a scene for the karaoke version MV of the "6 Foot Troubles" song in 2004. haha. she had to lie next to hacken on the ground while he was sleeping in the garden or something. and she was touching his face and put her hand on his chest.]
