PART 1
Host: The first episode's main character of the
interview is Hacken Lee. Let's check out his ups and
downs during his many years in the singing industry.
We will start to interview on december 3rd JSG Award
papparazi meeting. At the JSG Award Ceremony 2002,
which was last week, hundreds and thousands of people
have seen the awards presented. All of the male
artist's dream have landed on an artist who have been
in the music industry for 17 years, Hacken Lee's hand.
Everyone has already shared there moments at that
night. But why does Hacken need to wait for 17 years
to achieve his dream?
Hacken: When i was really little, i really liked to
sing. I remember the first time when i announced
singing was at a vacation. i remember at that time, i
was in middle school. I get to go to Phillipine for
vacation with my family. There will always be a 2-3
hour ride. The person would show us what's on the left
and what's on the right. After saying all the things,
i said why dont we sing a song. At that time, of
course there wasnt a microphone. So i used the wire
like on a taxi, there's a thing where u say over over
to sing. I walked out there and really sang a song.
The song i still remember that it is....(he sang it,
not sure what the name of the song is). That was my
first time singing it out loud. Of course, at that
time, my age is small, there was a lot of guys and
girls, aunties and uncles there, i received a
handlefull of claps and applause. At that time i feel
that singing....it's fun. I enjoy this kind of
applause. I am not sure if this is the reason why i
like to listen to it(the applause). I always like to
hear it, when i hear it, i get really happy. Awards
are....if i say i dont enjoy it, i would be lieing to
you. Right? Especially some meaningful awards. I
remember my first time receiving a Gold Song award is
Never Change For Life, which has passed for at least
10 years.
Host: Hacken is a beautiful voice king. He has
received 1st place in singing when entering the music
industry. But during his album release, he experienced
the music industry's hardships.
Hacken: At that time, us three, Chris, Cheung Ji
Kwong, and me, our music company didnt have a plan for
us compared to today's. Maybe put in a couple hundred
thousand dollars or have a commercial or ask a team of
professional people to help you, we didnt have any of
those back then. So the three of us, they dont have a
production course for you because it's very expensive.
so the three of us released a EP album, which has four
songs. The first one to release was Chris, the second
was me, and the third was Ji Kwong. Out of the three
of us, Chris sold the most. At that time, mine was
okay....sold....u cannot say good, sold about a couple
thousand copies. Then i waited for a period of time,
at least a year to release my first album. At that
time, if you ask me what had the biggest impact on me
these years, that is one of the biggest impact. When
about two years have passed, the first EP was okay.
Then, the second album didnt have a achievable number
either. Which sold about a hundred thousand. I have
thought that it was about time to continue on my
promise to continue after going to school things. But
at that time, choi sook had a series to film which was
"summer of '88". He asked me to film it. I never know
what a series is or how to act. Everyday going to
work, especially the first few weeks, i feel like i am
a ball of rice. the camera man always yell at me.
However, my actions are pretty high.(he got used to
filming and got better at it). After a while, i found
out he didnt yell at me that much. Then, i started to
enjoy it, filming is actually fun. And of course, very
happy after filming this series. Although this series
cannot be said as a very popular series or high rate,
it let the audience know that the guy with the very
long neck, black guy is Hacken Lee. Starting from
filming the series, after the series, i released an
album (not sure what it's called) received a $100
coupon.
Joey Leung: Starting from 1992, i really saw this
person. Back then, we were all young. We were at TVB
filming some young people show. At that time, he and
i....wait, i think it's called, "Talk Of The Century"
if i didnt remember wrong. We still get to film these
young shows. Back then, Hacken gave me a feeling that
is very different than today. Back then, he had some
young people's attitude which his head is always like
this. At that time, he gave me a feeling like
eehh....how come this young artist's head is like
this. I thought he has a problem and wanted to
introduce him to a doctor.
Guy in hat: When Hacken Lee talks, he is sometimes
mean or aweful. A lot of celebrities would believe
him. But thinking if I was the person, the person he
was talking mean to, thinking at a higher level, it
might be good thing. Maybe him talking mean to people,
is not the worstest thing.
Hacken: At that time, I dont really know what's
happening or dont feel that i have got on anyone's
nerves or how other people think of me. I only
know....i have money, have a job, the thing i am doing
makes me happy i would continue, i dont have any plans
for the future either. I dont know that i have got on
a lot of people's nerves. Until i see magazines talk
about it, until friends tell you about it, until even
farther..i remember Joey Leung told me, "When I first
met you, i didnt really have a good feeling about
you." A lot of things, i notice them after. After
knowing about it, I was unhappy. And....would use ways
to fix the problems. I dont know why these kind of
things, at the beginning, little bit goes out but when
you know about it, all of the things come back at
once. I really used a lot of time to fix this problem.
Guy in Long Hair: Actually, his person, he has a nice
personality which that he is real. Although, he used
to talk a lot that would have got on other people's
nerves. But he is real. If he feels that it is funny,
he would say it out loud. He quickly say it normallly.
Although some people cannot accept but everytime i
hear it, i would get it and think it's funny too. This
is actually, this thing, he is real, he talks straight
forward. When he acts, when he says a line, going
through his brain and saying it. He says it normally.
Joey Leung: During these 10 years, in front of my
friends i cried once or twice. During these one or two
times, the friend would be Hacken Lee, so it's pretty
cute. I can tell everyone a story. Once upon a time,
it was around '93, '94, i had a breakup. At that time,
I was working with Hacken. I was next to him. We were
talking and drinking beer. Then we started to talk
about heart problems. I remember i leaned on his
thighs and cried for a while. Not a lot of people know
about this.
Hacken: In the year 1993, I had my first concert, the
tickets sold very well, filled with a lot of people.
That time i remember is,,(a song name but i dont know
the song's english name). The road was pretty smooth.
Then till '95, when i had my next concert, i was
confident because the last concert was good. So i had
a 10 night concert and even booked for a couple more
days at the end to add. But the result made me, or
company surprised and it was not good. But everyday, i
was scared going to the coliseum because i dont know
how many people would be there to watch. But wasnt
brave enough to ask. You know you would hear a lot of
things you dont want to hear..."I told you he cant
make it, having a 10 night concert, good for him, told
you he is not good." I hear a lot of...including
people from the entertainment or even relatives i dont
see often."What's up big star? When's the next
concert?" Those kind of things. It's not good to hear.
At that time, I remember Alan was the guest for one of
the nights. After that, one night, he came up, i
remember i was singing Never Change For Life, and he
stood behind me. He wasnt talking or singing, but he
was listening to me singing. After i sing, he told
me...em...no matter how many audience is left out
there, being a professional artist, you must use the
best to perform. I feel that at that night, i did do
my best.
He told me that if you dont want this situation to
happen again at your next concert, you must work hard,
you must tell the audience that didnt come today, that
it's their loss. They will come next time. He also
said that...hope this situation would change soon.
But, however, this situation hasnt changed for 6-7
years.
Host: Hacken has a beautiful and fantastic music
talent. But he had many hardships in the music
industry. However, without think about it, he was the
first artist to receive an acting award including my
favorite series main character. To his respecting most
favorite male singer award, is it a support.
Hacken: This is my first award in acting. I feel
really happy.

Part 2
Host: Before the JSG Award Ceremony, Hacken's
appearance has increased. He was involved in many
different activities. We have been following him most
of the time. Especially this year, Hacken Lee's
healthy figure joined many different kinds of activity
appearance. This year's FOON LAUK MOON DOONG WAH big
show, Hacken and Tam Principle are some of the guests.
Doong Wah is a big show. The Music Industry's
hardships is like that. Besides this year, actually
all the time, is he using other techniques to hide his
mistakes in the music industry or is it like what
rumors had said, to gain the most favorite male
singer? However, to a singer, hosting JSG to help
other artist cheer for their song, but doesnt have one
song for himself's unhappiness, how does he go through
this?
Hacken: At that time, hosting JSG, doing the show is
not easy. Because #1, at that time, it's at a "release
album time." There was a problem that occured between
the contract with the company and releasing an album
which i couldnt releasing any album. About a year or
two situation. The feeling is not so well.
And...instead i had a chance to host something music
related, but couldnt sing.
Joey Leung: Talking about low key, i feel that it
cannot be said as low key. I would use quiet to
describe it. For example, these two years, it is true
that Hacken was very active. Before that, is it called
Low Key? He had actually, continuing working. He was
continuously acting for TVB or hosting other shows.
It's because everybody wasnt aware of him. Because you
know, that ten years, the generation had popular idol
based upon singers. A lot of talent based singers had
been putted down two or three times.
Guy with glasses: I feel that during his low key
times, he has never left the music circle. But on his
singing talent, he didnt show it out. At the same
time, he had other, for example, acting in series or
hosting shows, he is actually very high key showing
his appearance. I feel that he working very hard to
collect his own bullets, collecting his own chips.
Then at the right time, he would take out the bullets
and attack, get the chips out and gamble a game. I
feel that he is one smart actor.
Hacken: At that time, filming for, no matter if it's
series or somthing that is filming related, at the
beginning, because in the middle, there is only one
target which is hoping that it would help my singing.
How would it help my singing? For example, filming for
tv series, you can sing the themesong or when the
series is airing, it helps a little. Actually, im just
trying to use some appearance in tv series hoping it
would help my singing things. Or maybe i can have more
support from the audience. It also called "Go In
House." (dont really understand what that means) At
that time, my feeling is like that. Actually at that
time, i didnt know how to think well about it. The
manager tells you what you need to do and you do it.
Every year, someone says that filming for series is
because of winning awards. I feel that this topic is
very funny. I used to think the same. I feel that if
you help a company do many things then at the end of
the year, maybe winning awards would have a higher
chance. But I believe these 10 or more years, if you
count only artist that help TVB work the most, i think
it's probably me. Other small things must be me too.
But till right now, i dont think i received any
excellent awards. Maybe if there is, it didnt happen
on me.
There is something that i wanted to ask you a long
time ago. You and me are not related but i am only
similar to you. Why do you starting from the
beginning......
Alan: Wait, why are you similar to me?
Hacken: The singing voice. Why are you so nice to me?
Alan: Because, let me tell you, everybody doesnt know
that Hacken is my son.
Hacken: Can That Be?
Alan: Going that far? Let me tell you, I really admire
you. At that year, i really admire Hacken. I said he
is my replacement. But i couldnt believe that this had
harmed him. Harmed him until today, harmed him having
so many pressure behind his back like a turtle going
up a hill. So hard....let's have a drink.
Hacken: It's okay. Havent known yet. I still think
that if i like a person and we have somthing
alike/similar, if i can really be a replacement for
him, it would be a happy thing. But till today, i
cannot think of anyone, including me, can replace him.
It is like a mystery. All the way till today, i dont
know why he cheers for me, so nice to me. Even his
meaning to me has expand to his friends to treat me
like this.
Nathan: I am not. I like him. It's not because someone
likes him and i like him. Or what company he is from.
Alan likes him and i like him is two different thing.
This meaning is from my heart to support him. It's not
easy to for me to truly support someone. You know how
i am hard to deal with.
Hacken: Between the six of them, Eric Tsang is the one
who has the leastest chance to play with me and talk
to me out of the three of us. But, dont see him
usually laughing, but when i need to ask him question,
he seriously answers me. Truly, at hosting, he gave me
different ideas. The thing that i have learned the
most is that he told me when hosting for any show,
practice is the most important.
Eric Tsang: Hacken doesnt really need us to teach him.
Maybe because he thinks these words i said is what he
learned the most is beside from other singers, he had
the words in mind. Which identifies that he is a
person who really listens to you, not a person who
listens and forgets it.
Andy Lau: I feel that the thing that makes us two more
closer would be when we were at Owen and someone told
us to leave, Salaysee(not sure what place it is) I
dont know if everybody still remembers it. But him and
i went to an Owen club. We wanted to follow the hong
kong club to see the american flag rise. But Salaysee
told us to leave. At that moment, because of a
friendship, we had became one step closer. But i feel
one thing upon his working, you can give him some
support. No matter if he achieves the goal, he would
feel warm. So i feel that helping each other or
supporting each other is an important thing. He does
the same. Sometimes he...during my unhappy times, he
say things to make me feel better. I feel that these
are friendship.
Guy in glasses: He was once on the edge. The
Principle(Alan) always looks after him. He had
mentioned that he is the fifth king. But of course if
according to experience and singing skills/talent he
should be the fifth king. However, there is only four
spots and cannot be added. And he has to be the fifth
one like a follow up.
Andy Lau: The reason why he had a low key, sorry is ,
because of my existence. So it's based on me. I have
explained to him about this reason many times, telling
him to not worry. This pressure is always there. I am
here, he better not think about it.
Hacken: I never felt jealous about the four kings. I
never thought about it. But i feel that it's pretty
funny about the fifth king.
Host: Even though there many talented artist. Hacken
has a lot of experience these years. This year, he is
going to make a come back. He received many awards at
other award ceremonies. At that time, JSG award
ceremony was getting close. His dream is coming close.
What is the reason why the "favorite male award" had
landed on other people for so many years? He told us
that when he was young, he was acting cool, he was
very straight forward, and harmed many people. But
luckly, he has many true and close friends that
support and cheer for him. Trying to gain the award
for many years, how he treat others and his singing
talent had grown. Next episode, let Hacken talk about
his feelings.

Host: Starting from the beginning of 2002, we have
been following closely about the awards Hacken will
recieve this year. A singer, other than awards that
proves his hardwork and standing place, solo concerts
are also an important. Hacken's different concerts
have directly effected his confident. Having his
concerts are really difficult.
Hacken: I have experienced it. Actually, when the
concert in 1995 wasnt well, the year has some effects.
For example, the albums that were release after or
even contracts had some effects from the concert in
1995. After, it had an impact on my job. Then until
having a concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra in 2001, the concert was really...you can
say it was luck or you can say it wasnt notice by
heart. But was not that someone has a lot of confident
in me and arrange a concert for me. It was not that.
It was actually that the Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra had asked Alan to have a concert. But Alan
was too busy. So he said why dont you find Hacken. I
think they couldn't find anyone else so they find me.
After finding me, nobody would know that because the
Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra can have 4 day
concert. At that time, 4 nights is a really long
concert. Nobody has had that many concerts with them
before. Knowing that all 4 days were very full, the
feeling was...there was really tears dropping down
from here. Feeling that my work in these couple years
wasn't wasted. Also because of the concert, it brought
up all of my things. For example, album selling
number, popularity, other, other, and of course adding
the beginning of this year's concerts. Concerts have a
very big impact on me and i really love them. The
concert from the beginning of this year, i feel that
the part was good. Because my dad, really isn't a
musician. His technique is stayed at a level. But that
part in the concert, i feel that it gave the audience
a warm feeling. Because being able to work with a
family member in music, i have never thought of that.
It can reflect that they have always been supporting
me. But to my family, i dont like to say these things
to them. For example, I wouldn't purposely on their
birthday or anything buy them a gift. Or on new years,
call them to say happy new years. All of us don't like
to do any of this. But everybody feels that we care
about each other.
Host: Family support is very important. But being able
to have support from the company and boss has a direct
effect. There were rumors that he had disagreements
with Chun Siu Bo.
Hacken: Siu Bo is like a...very....very....American
boss, the feeling that he gives me. Why i say this is
because he is.....he believes in himself a lot, his
look towards music, many things about albums, he has a
way of looking towards them. I still remember, at that
time, the album (w/orchestra) did have a pretty big
disagreement. The disagreement was that he didn't agree
to release this live recording album. Other than not
really agreeing, he said to me directly that I feel it
is wrong that you have done this concert. Why he said
this is that the feeling you will give the audience is
that you look old. Do you know that the worst thing
is that you will give people the feeling that you are
old, the feeling that you give people is that after
this show, you will rise to the oldest place. Like
that. At that time, after listening to him talking, i
was pretty mad. The meaning of mad is that i came here
to ask you if i should release the album. I will
definitely do the show. You don't need to...it's okay
you have already put me down, but you don't need to put
down the show. At that time, i was pretty unhappy.
Until the concert had a good number,(meaning the
ticket's sold very well) we decided to release the
album. But actually when releasing, he didn't have much
confidence. But we couldn't guess that the number of
copies sold made him really happy and really surprised.
But Siu Bo, i feel that he has a very cute, very cute
part. It's that after knowing he had a wrong decision
upon this concert, he wouldn't purposely find an excuse
or hide from it. I remember once, when we went out to
eat dinner, he said to me that "this time's decision
he was wrong. We hope to have a better outcome and
more work together in the future." I feel that..i don't
think any other boss would say this. The feeling is
very...very....he gave me a feeling towards a change
about him is that he can be a very straightforward
person. We can say this directly to each other.
Chun Siu Bo: We, at that moment, had an album, we had
a really big disagreement. I had planned to not
release the album. I admit that i was wrong. The album
is Hacken's concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra. When his popularity came back, the
Philharmonic Orchestra and the album has a big
relationship towards it.
Host: Working together with the Philharmonic
Orchestra, seeing Hacken's talent in singing. It will
cause him to rise higher. Behind his sucess, his
girlfriend has many credits.
Hacken: Many years have passed, actually doesn't really
accept Hacken Lee.(sorry, doesnt really make sense,
talking about his clothing style) So near these times,
these 1-2 years, i have become aware of these talents.
It actually has a limit. So why dont i give it to
someone who can do it for me. Of course this person
has to know me well, know how my job is like, what i
like or not like. Everybody knows this person is my
girlfriend. She would be in charge of all my things. I
feel that this is easier, first of all, it's easier
for me because i dont have talents in doing this.
Second, I dont have the time. Third, i dont have
interest in it. If it's like this then why don't i let
her do it. For example, this time no matter if it's
the coming JSG Award Clothes or award presentation
ceremonies clothes or coming concert clothes, she has
found professional people to design it for me. I
believe, these days, people start to find that
Hacken's clothes is better. So i think her credit
is not less.
After receiving the 19th District Singing
Contest, i can sign a contract with Polygram. I was
like, WAH! awesome! I can be in the same company as
Alan Tam. Being able to have the same company as Alan
Tam, it can make me very happy for many nights.
(Alan & Hacken Sings)
Hacken: Hey, are you thinking that we will sing this?
Is the format like this?
Alan: In the concert, i feel that these songs, the
audience will like it, will expect it. We need to have
it but it depends on which part.
Hacken: Is it more or less?
Alan: These songs?
Hacken: Yea
Alan: Gold Songs, so it's the most.
Hacken: The most?
Alan: Of course. But we can switch singing.
Hacken: Yes, I feel...because everybody have heard you
and me sing. We can switch around. Maybe for some of
them you sing A1 and i sing A2 and some together.
Alan: She thinks it's right too, right? What's her

Hacken: Mui Mui
Alan: Mui Mui, is it right?
Hacken: Mui Mui, it's right.
Alan: Right! She says it's good. She has confidence in
our concert.
Host: Finally, it's a day before the JSG Award
Ceremony. Did his fans' support and screams, increase

appearance, Hacken havent missed any other things. So

outside in the morning. He has to split himself. He

Award, we all scream it together, Hacken Lee!
Eric Tsang: Hacken today, being able to receive so
many awards, i feel that he deserves them. Because he
really walks out, walks out alone by himself. He
doesn't have a lot of luck or help from company, other
things. None. All by himself walking slowly. Adding up
together and then really thick. He received this
award today, look at the audience's reaction, i have
hosted many JSG's, a singer receiving this award,
usually other singers sitting down, you would see them
uncomfortable or unhappy or maybe jealous. But this
time when Hacken received it, everyone had a realistic
happiness proving that he deserved the award.
Hacken: I don't know what to say. Very happy...dream
came true. I have been up to the stage many times,
just playing along with Andy Lau, doing something i
don't think i will have a chance to win. Cannot believe
this time, i can receive this award. Don't know what to
say. I'm blank. I really want to thank, really thank
the people i have said before. Of course, i have
missed many including Nat Chan, Eric Tsang, Andy Lau,
etc,etc. I can't say that many myself. Thank You to all
the friends who cared about Hacken Lee. I will
continue to work hard. I love you, thank you, thank
you.
Host: Know that Hacken won the award, fans are already
waiting at the afterward celebration party, hoping to
see their idol. The atmosphere of the celebration is
very high. Hacken is the main person of the camera.
Not only Hacken is happy to achieve his dream, every
friend who supports him is happy, too.
Hacken: Hey, hey, drank a couple cups right now. we
can say the truth.
Alan: Talk about the truth.
Hacken: ok, talk about the truth, drank a couple cups
right now. When you got this, your award looked
different.
Alan: I don't understand, you're the one receiving this
award, i am more nervous than you.
Hacken: Dont have that facial expression, i want to
cry.
Alan: But really, let me tell you. In my heart, not
knowing that i minded about it many years. Because i
said something that affected you. Replacement, that
word gave you some pressure.
Hacken: Not really, i feel.
Alan: There was wiping strength (makes him work
harder)
Hacken: There was wiping strength. I don't think that
it's a really big pressure that i can't handle.
Alan: But you must have the quality.
Hacken: But, but i can openly say that when a person
tells you he thinks you are talented, but for many
years, it didn't seem like you had good report cards.
Do have a worried heart. So when i was on stage, i
said i did not let you down. Hey, don't make me cry.
Hacken: Seriously, i didn't have much pressure
recording this interview because i always feel that
whether you participate in any competition, if you
win, dont be too anxious or overly happy. Alan says win,
don't be proud is correct. If lose, then lose cooly. I feel
that i have participated in this competition, if i
win, then i will be happy. But if i lose, i would be
able to face it bravely. So i am not afraid you
following me this whole month. Oh no, what if i don't
win the award, what can i say to make myself feel
better. Actually, i have not worried about that
because i always feel that it's not my last year. If i
really didn't win it this year, the following year, i
would continue to work hard. Or maybe find what i
didn't do so well this year and do it better next year.
I am a person who can absolutely bravely face any kind
of result. Thankfully, i can receive it this year. It
does not mean that the game has ended. The most
important thing is the coming year, i need to work
even harder because creating is hard, job is even
harder. It may be the old style, but this is the truth.
Hacken Lee will continue to work hard.
