Hacken's Given the Title of Most Faithful Boyfriend

Hacken attended the "apm x Hacken Lee Concert Hall Christmas Music Function" yesterday at Kwoon Tong, it attract almost 1000 fans. The host said many fine things about Hacken as a christmas gift to him. When he saw a girl dressed up as a Miss Hong Kong Winner give him the award of "Most Faithful Boyfriend" he began to laugh.

When You're Happy You'll Be Together

When given the award "Most Faithful Boyfriend" Hacken spoke frankly and said "I don't think being faithful is an award, if two people are happy then they'll be together, if she finds someone that is better then me then she'll leave me." When Hacken was writing words of blessing, he was distracted by the host and wrote the wrong word. He was going to write Good Health (in chinese) but flip the word healthy around *Sun Tai Hong Geen instead of Sun Tai Geen Hong*. Afterwards, he signed autographs for his fans.

Hacken Will Never "Ding" Emily Lo Away

Hacken's fans thinks that he is the on screen version of Stephen Chow, but actually he is a very boring person.

Hacken says that he will marry Emily Lo within two years, and share their happiness with friends and family.

Hacken wanted to help, but just couldn't
Hacken's good friend, Joey Leung, earlier has been caught cheating with Queenie, which made Joey's girlfriend, Margret Chung steaming mad. Hacken did not give any advice because he didn't want to interfear, and said that within two years, he will marry his girlfriend, Emily Lo.

Friendships: Banquets to cherish memories
Hacken's buddy, Joey Leung and Miss Hong Kong, Queenie Chu's cheating event creates a stir. Other than going to work, Joey Leung has hid himself at home, Margret Chung finds it hard to forgive him but at the same time she can't let him go. Hacken doesn't mind talking about Joey's love life, but he believes that he should let Joey Leung solve his own problems.

Yesterday, Hacken accepted our interview at Tsim Sha Chui, right when they started the interview, Hacken help his buddy say a few good words. "Everyone has made a mistake before, as his friend I wish to be able to help him share his sorrow and get over this difficult time as soon as possible. I hope the public can give him a second chance. If I say too much it won't be fair to Joey, so we'll let him face his own problem."

He Helped Joey Ask for Forgivness
Rumours have it that after Joey was caught cheating Hacken went to talk to the higher level, Chan Chi Wun, to forgive Joey. Hacken said "I didn't! Joey is an adult, he knows what he has to do on his own. As a friend, I am there to help him analyze the problem and give him advice, in the end it is his choice to decide what he wants to do. All of you have overestimated my influence to TVB, I am only an employee, I can't influence the decisions the higher level plan to make. No one else, but Joey himself, can solve his own problems." Is there a cat that won't steal fishes (aka. someone that won't cheat), is Hacken this cat that won't steal? He laughed and said "I don't know if I will cheat, I still haven't met that "fish", I've always hope to meet them, but those fish never swim to me, at first there was, but I didn't give myself a chance. Talking about whether I would cheat or not is not so good to Joey Leung, I've only been lucky, I'm actually a really boring person!"

"People always see me on screen as a very happy person, always laughing and joking around, and thinking that I'm an on screen version of Stephen Chow, but I'm not. When it's about work, I've a very serious person, at work there is already a lot of drama, at home, I just want things to be simple. I actually like the simple life better, I won't go out just to find something different to do all the time. I usually just go golfing, watch sports, eat, watch series, play mahjong and that's about it. Emily is like that too."

Never Thought of Returning the Product
Hacken's goal are to be married before 40, he said "I will get married, but I don't have the exact dates yet, it won't be any later then next year or the year after next, all I can tell you is, it will be before I turn 40." In regards to whether it would be a grand banquet he said he has thought of that and will tell us later on and that their will be a banquet. Hacken said "I have said before that I was not planning to have a banquet, but one time when Jan Lam was helping me do the cover for my CD, he said he doesn't like wedding banquets, it's such a hassle and there's so much to do, but it would be a really good memory to cherish. That coming from someone that is so untraditional and in fashion made me think things over again, whether it's a cocktail or a party, it is something worthy of doing." Hacken also gave his girlfriend a reasurance pill, he laughed and said "Individuals are changing all the time, the most important thing is to help each other out and find happiness. Two people wouldn't be together if they weren't happy, if one day on person was unhappy it will make the other person unhappy and then they will just go their own seperate ways. If two people together were happy, then keep it that way, in many relationship, the two are always helping each other out and taking care of each other. Just a simple task like that may already be very satisfying and never thought of "returning the product" (aka. each other) and it never has to change.

Career: TVB and Hacken Benefits From Each Other
Every year when it is awards season, it is time for singers to get their report cards, the previous years it's always been competitions between Leo Ku and Hacken Lee, this year, there is most competitors. Eason has returned into the ring, when ask about awards, Hacken said he doesn't bother to think about it. He says he's won awards but he has also lost, as well there is a strong competitor, Andy Lau. Instead of spending time on thinking of how to win award, why not think of how to make his CD sell better, his is more meaningful. He is busy thinking of his new CD that has just been released and his concert next year.

Andy Lau a Strong Competitor
Hacken laughed and replied "I've seen everything, I've won the best and the worst awards. A lot of this I cannot control. If the song is good, you will give me an award, there are a lot of people out there are deserves to win these awards. I don't even know what else I can say about Andy Lau, he's a superhero, nothing can stop him, I've known him for a long time, before he would be worried but now he's really easy and relaxed about it. Andy is a very hard working person, if you are not a hard worker in the entertainment circle you will be eliminated very soon. There might not be someone in the entertainment business that has given up less than Andy Lau, but there is not another person that is as hard working as Andy Lau."

Nevertheless, the godson of TVB, Hacken, has spent a lot of time this year filming "Minutes to Fame", next year he will be the host of the World Cup, so there has been rumours saying that Hacken is only doing this to win more awards.

Minutes to Fame to win Awards?
Hacken said "Filming Minutes to Fame to win awards? If by filming I could win awards, then that would be easy. Why would I still need put so much effort into work then? I started filming in 1988-1989, if filming series makes you win awards, then I should have won them ten years ago. When Gallen Lo was a singer, did you see him win Most Favourite Male Singer award?"

When asked who Hacken thinks will win this year he said "If you ask me, it's still Andy Lau, in two different generations there are two most liked singer, one is Alan Tam and the other is Andy Lau."

Health: Vocal Cords
One year ago, Hacken's health has been poor, for example, if he was practicing for a performance, he will lack the energy, his breathing/lungs are poor, vocal cords are poor and then he will be singing out of tune, this has made him very uneasy.

Hacken said "Last years July, my health has been very poor, I am no longer 18, 22 (chinese saying, meaning young). I do a lot of exercise and my life is very normal, but yet this can still happen. There has been problems with my vocal cords, it's not a really big problem, the audience haven't said anything, but it just doesn't match my own standards. Last year when I was the guest performer for Miss Hong Kong, there was a part where Gigi Leung and I sung together. When I listen back to it, it scares me, it sounds like I don't even know how to sing. At around the same time when I was at the Sun Project function, I sung out of tune too!"

Joey Yung a Life Saver
Hacken said "One time Joey and I had to perform at Nham Jing, she introduce me to an acupuncter, she's pretty good, I did it once and thought it went pretty well. This time when she went to Hong Kong to listen to Joey's concert she helped me again, she had no plans to work, yet she still helped me."

"When I went to see a western doctor, they told me to just rest and I would be fine soon, but how can I rest? Resting is not an option in the entertainment business. The doctor said not to sing until my vocal cord is healed, but now I am about 95% healed. I just won't let myself not get enough sleep, not let myself watch soccer too late at night, I'll just record it and watch it another day. I'm 38, I can't let myself treat my body as if I'm only 18 anymore!"

HACKEN GETS TO SING MAN U ASIAN SONG

OVERVIEW OF NEWS REGARDING ASIAN FANCLUB SONG

hacken gets to sing the man u asian fan club song after all. initially, he was ecstatic when he was invited to sing the asian fan club song and negotiations were slow but steady until it suddenly came to nought. hacken thought all was lost when man u got took over (discussions stopped abruptly) and atv won the broadcasting rights to the Man U match in hk(he had to reject participation in all activities cos he is a contracted TVB singer and appearing on ATV will put him in an awkward position).

however, man u did not give up on him.

instead, they looked for him through other means and invited him to be the ambassador of their china/hk official website. at the same time, they also invited him to their activities in HK when they come and he will get the opportunity of a lifetime to come into close contact with his idols. They have also decided to release the fan club song after all. they did not want to make things difficult for him and hence, he does not need to sing the song when they arrive. instead, the song will be placed on the website. although the ambassador job was voluntary on hacken's part (=no $$$), he noted that man u will pump in a 7 figure amt (hk$) into the promotion of the song. the website will also provide a platform for him to share his thoughts on man u with other fans as well as provide his latest updates.

RANDOM info: about Hacken's intl fan club

in June 2004, Hacken had a fan club meeting, and a Scoop reporter interviewed a fan of his. Longfumoon translated what they said for me:

this was about hacken's international fan club was established 15 years, so there was a little meeting, this was the first meeting between hacken and his fans in 4 years.

the guy said that hacken would be better if he make a little change, and hacken said that it's ok say it out he wouldn't disqualify his member in the fan club. then the fan said have at least one meeting with the fan club each year

04) The End of the World (Hacken Lyrist)

Sometimes feeling city people, lifestyle is so tense,
go to work , get out of work. All day's
life is trap in work. Have no time to connect with
things outside of work. That's why this song
is created. From the lyrics, music, to singing style,
have two parts. First is like working that's
why the style of singing is so lazy. Have a bored
feeling.

5) Don't Be Like This

Early this year the incident is the football stadium.
Believe everyone has a different point of view
Some say should be open, some say it shouldn't. This
song has used Rap Talk style to show how I feel
about this incident. Some people may feel this song is
kinda weird. Actually I want to put the two
views to see. Justice Bao is really famous, But people
who don't watch it might feel a little annoyed?

6) Oh Candice

I think this song is a really Sweet little product and I
hope each song has it's own style.
So in arrangment added in some Hawaii feel, don't know
if when you listen to this song, Candice,
Will it make you want to dance?

7) I Love You

Early this year, went to USA Universal film headquarter
to watch a show, saw 2 men and 2 women
No music, and sang for a whole night. Only the main
voice and background voice. After that I
felt really good. So thought of this song. it might not
be so Commercial, it's a new try for me!


8) Never Forget You

Now Hong Kong music has a lot of piano, guitar,
electronic instruments put together, Not too much
Hamonica. For making this song have a European feeling,
Chow Jun-San used it as the backbone. Making the
romantic feel go to another level

9) The Long lonely back alley

Actually this time a lot of the songs' key is really
low, not like 'Red Day'!
Cause want to try that don't need the key to be high
to make it sound good.
Want to find another type of music with low key, and
this one is the trademark.

10) Cinderella (Hacken Lyrist)

Some say women are made up of water,
some say they are really scared when seeing women cry.
And I think when women cry it's the most romantic,
especially just before the break up,
every tear makes a dent into the brain. This song is to
capture these feelings. Cinderella has
to leave her lover at midnight. Some say it's
romantic, some say it's sad. Can't it be called
a sadness romance? One thing has to be mentioned, the
singing style, it's different then all
the old love songs by me. The technique is as if it's
zero, a totally natural singing style.

11) Human One life, everything is guts [meaning you have to be daring in life]
[themesong of the TVB series he starred in, Master of Martial Arts

Everyone knows this is a themesong of a tv series, To make
it have a better atmosphere, Chow Jun-San
put in the old Hong Kong kung-fu movie's sound to make
it into music, and have got James Wong to
write such powerful lyrics.

If I didn't work with Chow Jun-San, really don't know we
can create such firework!

HK’s Hacken Lee to marry ex-beauty queen

HONG KONG: Hong Kong pop idol Hacken Lee is set to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend
next year, a press report said yesterday.

Hacken Lee
The 37-year-old veteran singer told Chinese language newspaper Ming Pao that he and former
beauty queen Emily Lo plan to get married next February.

“The soonest (I can get married) is after Chinese New Year because I have to work hard before a
music award. So I have to put relationship aside for now,” he was quoted as saying.

Hacken Lee doesn't forget where he came from

SING TAO - If it weren't for Vivian Chow, Hacken Lee might have been a famous interior designer. At every year's music awards, he might have been sitting at home watching the show on TV instead of being a nominee. Hacken had an uncle who owned an interior design business in the United States. Early in Hacken's childhood, his family already had plans for him. After he finished high school in Hong Kong, he would study interior design in the States. Afterwards, he would take over his uncle's business. After summar vacation in Form 5 in 1985, Hacken entered TVB's 4th Annual New Talent Competition. One of the judges was late legend Leslie Cheung, who disqualified Hacken. Even though Hacken didn't get into the Top 30, he did meet someone who he became good friends with - Vivian Chow. After several months, Hacken returned to school for Form 6 and was already filling out USA college applications. At that time, Vivian told Hacken to participate in the 19 Territories Singing Competition. Hacken went on to win First Place at this competition, and this completely rewrites the story of his life. "When I won the competition, it messed up all the plans for college. Winning first place got me a PolyGram recording contract. It was so much fun, so I never thought about not signing this record deal. Now my family has immigrated so they're not against it anymore. If I could choose again, I would still be a singer." When he first became a singer, record sales weren't ideal. After shooting a TVB series, his star power and record sales started to climb. Hacken left PolyGram for another label, but the company had a lot of internal problems. This was the point Hacken experienced two years of lows. But he didn't think about leaving the showbiz at all. Rather, he become a sports announcer for TVB's coverage of the World Cup and also emceed for Jade Solid Gold awards. "I covered World Cup with Eric Tsang and Nat Chan. I sat in the middle among the three of us. They were like left and right guards bringing me along. Ever since I was little, even though my grades weren't good at school, I would use my allowance to buy soccer magazines every week. When I had that announcer job, I was really satisfied. When I went out, soccer fans would treat me like an expert and talk sports." At that point, Hacken became known as a butt kisser to TVB, praising the television channel left and right. But Hacken didn't care. "TVB gave me a lot of opportunities and even when I didn't have a contract with them, they sought me to do a lot of big shows. And when I worked for them, I became friends with a lot of employees, like producers and directors. When work came up that fit me, they would call me. Someone asked me, how come TVB doesn't look for other singers, because they are so many of them? I guessed because TVB doesn't need to go through managers and record labels to get to me. They contact me directly and think it's easier. Plus, I'm cheap, beautiful and upright, haha." We don't need to explain what "cheap" is. "Beautiful" means talented and "upright" means he doesn't mind. Hacken is known as the "Fifth King" and has earned a reputation of being stubborn. Since winning Most Popular Male Singer two years ago on TVB, many have stopped him on the street to tell him that he earned and deserved the award. "It would be embarassing if fans and the audience thought I didn't deserve the award." Who does Hacken think deserves to win this year? "Andy Lau's album, concerts, movies - all of them are bestsellers this year. I can't think of anyone who is more popular than him. The best thing is that Andy and I never go against each other. We always support each other. He is really my Most Popular Friend."

Armed with many awards, Hacken Lee, a veteran in 90s Chinese pop, could use a very big trophy room. Whether you like his vocal style or not, Hacken's fame is largely due to his unique voice and his determination to succeed. Hacken always says that Alan teaches him the reasons of life. Alan is the world’s friend and he tries to learn from Alan. M: Completing the Music is Live Concert, does that mean the relationship is back to normal?

H: before there was no Diplomatic relation, but there is now, is it like my friendship with other singers? Right now it is not. (Hacken never received the Best Male Singer from CR). Going to CR ceremony, main reason is because I don’t want any enemies within the showbiz, if going to the ceremony can shrink the distance between us, then I am more than willing to go. At the time many people told me not to attend, including my manager and the record company, they said, [you need to have a backbone]. The only person that told me to go was Alan. Ever since going, the feeling among us is much better.

M: January 1, 2005, will you be attending?

H: I hope I can go, but there is a lot of resistance, mainly from the record company, they hope to have better terms and conditions.

M: What reasons made your constant standpoint to weaken?

H: At least they will play my songs. Official explanation is that the DJ’s who dislike me has already left the company. Another reason is that both parties are willing to try to patch up the relationship and make things better. I used to be strong with my opinions, but maybe because I wasn’t standing strongly on this matter, so we were able to make our relationship better. I am a very straightforward person, we won’t be going back on my wrong doings, so there is not diplomatic relation. In addition, for couple of years, my singing career wasn’t too smooth, they have a bunch other artists’ songs to play, why play Hacken’s songs, the record company didn’t help me fight for my chances, because I wasn’t their priority.

M: within these two years, did the relationship ever change?

H: If I didn’t stand strong on my opinions, at least I would have already have a Music is Live concert two years ago. I remember that a high official of CR (now is one my close friends), wanted me to do a Music is Live concert, at that time CR haven’t presented me with an award, I said, [let’s just get to the point, since we are not friends, my reasons are never-ending for rejecting your offer. But if I can’t make it into the Top Ten Charts, I won’t be happy doing this Music is Live concert]. I don’t know why I had the courage to say that, I remember when we were in the CR conference room, everyone was silent for several seconds. Even till today, I still believe I was right, at the time you thought my songs were not up-to standard for your radio, fine! No problem, then why do you need me to do the show for you? For example, you don’t come to my restaurant, but tell people to come and order to-go, I think there is a very big problem.

AWARDS IN LIVING ROOM, GET TO SEE IT EVERYDAY
New Heavenly Kings is kinda weird, Hacken first came out in ’86, his resume dates back further compared to the Old Heavenly Kings, Leon Lai and Aaron Kwok, with Leo Ku, there is a 2-3 generation gap in between. Hacken has been through many highs and lows, in the beginning he was always under Jacky Cheung who is in the same record company. But with the song “Deep, Deep, Deep” (sum, sum, sum), he became famous. But when he departed from Polygram, his career jumped to the bottom, but by being the host of JSG and World Cup, he was able to continue recognition from the audience; four years ago when he returned to Universal, his career takes a surprisingly big turn, including receiving the honor of being the Most Popular Male Singer for two consecutive years.

M: Where did you place this year and last year’s Most Popular Male Singer award?

H: I placed in a display cabinet in the living room, taking a look always makes me happy, it proves that I did receive this award. In my career, besides money and feeling, only awards can truly represent me, actually in my career, I have already made accomplishments. Actually to tell you the truth, whether it was my second or third time getting the award, it didn’t help with my record sales, it was actually the first time that I received it when it affected my record sales, as for this year, whether I get it or not, it won’t affect my record sales. Awards is something that is very important to the people who support me, just like how when Alan received awards before, I was always very happy because I am his fan. Its like in a soccer match, if Manchester wins the championship, its not my business but when I see how they defeat the other team, I would be very happy. If I was [??] (soccer player’s name), I will play better because a lot of people support me and would want to see me get the champion.

M: you’ve seen the bottom of your career before, would you be more tight or cautious of your accomplishments?

H: When I received this award, I am already not young anymore, 35, if I receive it when I was 25, I wouldn’t know how to handle, I would have too much pride of myself, when I speak I would talk louder. (used to describe domination or having higher stand over other people). I have seen this happen before, will be criticized by people, presenting you the award was suppose to encourage you, but instead it has harmed you. In between time, I have been through my highs and lows, so I know how to deal with my emotions. I’ve seen many things in life, and its quite scary, after the awards ceremony, people would go to the celebration party, a lot of people crowded around, some singers would hold onto their awards, some were scolded at, using very harsh words that hurts people, or get hidden from people. Within large crowds, the feeling is very straightforward that tells you whether you are popular or not or whether people hate you or not. I have seen Dayo Wong’s (Wong Ji Wah) stand-up comedy, he said that if Mr. Tung (HK Government) is able to go through the streets of Yau Jim Wong without bodyguards and come home safely, then that means that is accepted by the people. Being a celebrity is the same, when you are in public areas with other people and you don’t get criticism from people or hear bad words about you, then that proves that your relationship with the people is good.

M: you were once said to be overbearing.

H: at the time I wasn’t handling my mindset very well, even though I didn’t truly mean it, when other people say that about you, you can’t not admit to it. Some words, when I say it, it doesn’t seem like there is any problem, but the person hearing it, will feel that there is a problem. I am very lucky, I was once criticized, but everyone still give me a chance, now I really understand the concept (not sure how to explain it, but has to do with the words you use with people).

M: on your career downturn, when leaving the award ceremony empty-handed, how is that feeling?

H: of course is not a good feeling, every singer who attends the award ceremonies hope to go up on stage at least once, and sing at least one song. The first time I receive an award was in ’90, but the most suffering was that I went from having the award to not having the award, I asked the record company, why, and they said that in the record company, there are other singers who is better, having to fight for the award is still not your turn. I said to myself: [does this mean game over?] then the following year, still have no award, I remember that was the year I sang “Red Day”, the song is pretty good, but it never received any awards, I was very unhappy at the time. I think of it this way nowadays, if I win an award, I am the hero for only one night, if I lose, it is only for one night, when I wake up, it is the start of a new year, everything starts fresh again. Like this year, will I be able to get the 3rd Most Popular Male Singer Award? In a entertainment circle where people want something new and fresh, it is extremely difficult, in an audience point of view, I would want to see change too, him again, how boring.

M: Every ceremony has their rules and conditions, like a trade, are you afraid that the record company will change their player’s card? (change Hacken’s status in the company)

H: Every singer is the company’s player card, I should be honored to be a card of the company and not a baggage. When I first entered the showbiz, Alan was the player card, in charge of going around to bargain an award for me, now I hope I am able to help other people bargain, so it proves my bargaining power.

M: why did you set the rule that you must get the Most Popular Male Singer award before getting married?

H: this, everyone got the wrong message, every year reporters would ask me when am I going to get married, I said we’ll see what happens after the ceremonies first, then everyone thinks that I will get married right after the ceremonies, so does that mean, if I can’t get awards, then I won’t ever have to marry? Actually I really don’t know why people have so much interest in that? Her and I have been together for many years, everyone understands that clearly, but maybe because Hong Kong people really would want to see Hacken dressed formally and walking down the aisle. HOPE TO BECOME A FATHER SOON
Regarding Hacken’s marriage news, almost every year it was a topic for discussion, earlier it was said that he will have his banquet in February ’05. Hacken speaks for clarity saying that he was planned to marry in the fall, but because “Left Alan Right Lee” concert tour was scheduled tightly, and we couldn’t change the plans. Hacken says, right now he is actively planning to marry in 2005, when there is time, then his plans shall be initiated, his thoughts were to register in other part of the country, but he is most afraid to plan a banquet, so instead he’d rather host a party, for cake cutting and photo taking, and of course most importantly to receive gifts, money, and blessing from people, otherwise will have no money to have children.

M: As of right now, what plans are affecting your wedding plans?

H: the biggest consideration is about having children, we want to have children soon, actually in my 20s I already wanted to be a father, dragging till now (Hacken at age 38), it is already much later than anticipated. Having a 30 year gap with my children is already a huge gap, I don’t want it to be a 40 year gap. Jacky Cheung always say to me: [hurry and have children, after becoming a father, you will only regret that you have children too late in age.] making me very anxious. I can’t believe that Eason has become a father before me. Every time I see him, I am always happy for him.

M: When did you decide that Emily Lo was the person you truly want to marry?

H: A long time ago, my decision wasn’t just within these few years. Several singer friends asked me, what led you to the decision that she is the one, but I couldn’t answer that question, but the feeling tells me, when I am willingly to sacrifice anything for her, whether it was something big or small, then the answer is her. If there is any kind confusion or questioning, then she will not be one.

CONCLUSION – HONESTY

My feelings are that, Hacken is a very down-to-earth person, one who doesn’t speak in the exaggerating manner.

Among the New Heavenly Kings, he is the only one who would write his own lyrics, proving his efforts. He wrote the part in “Tall Girl” that goes “I am not 6 foot tall, but I will still treat you good”, is very simple, but truly expresses many men’s feelings.

In the recent “Flying Man”, is also written by him, the story line was originally planned to reflect on Tin Leung and Kwok Jing Jing (Olympic Divers), but one can’t believe that when the song was released, the person beside Kwok Jing Jing is already a different person.

Asked him, whether or not he would read books because of writing lyrics, he was very honest: [very little, I oftenly read the entertainment news and read the gossip magazines.]

Hacken is definitely very honest, when discussing his clothing style, always being the joke among the audience, did your wardrobe designer, Emily Lo, your girlfriend ever get upset? He replies: [its not her fault, if I am the joke for people, then its mainly because I dress disorderly].

He protects his girlfriend with words, seeing that he is not six foot tall, I get the feeling that Emily Lo’s patient wait was definitely worth the wait.

singing contest & won first prize. Later, he signed a
contract with PolyGram Hong Kong Ltd and became an artist.
His first album had earned good reputation & good comments
from professionals. In 1989, Hacken International Fans Club
was officially established.
Because Hacken was well known with his beautiful voice,
he received many awards. Other than singing, he was involved
with many television drama, video, advertisements, charity &
special shows.

His first concert (8 shows) held in December 1993 in
Hong Kong and later in 1994 he held concerts in North
America, Australia, etc..

In 1994 he released his first mandarin album which expanded his career
to mandarin market (mainly Mainland China & Taiwan). He was also

In order to learn more about music, Hacken in 1995 went to New York
for a 2 month course. In the same year, he returned to Hong Kong
to open his second concert (10 shows) which was also very successful.

"World Cup 98" made Hacken's career to a higher level. Hacken's
song was well known among the chinese around the world. This song
also did very well in the music charts & received TVB second quarter

Hacken's Amazing Turnaround

Hi Hacken fans,
I hope I don't sound too clueless, but I don't follow the entertainment news too closely. I've always thought Hacken had an amazing voice and glad he has been awarded Favorite Male Singer in the last 2 years. Although his career in the early 90's started out with a bang (Alan Tam had voiced many times that Hacken had boatloads of talent), but then in the mid to late 90's Hacken's popularity fell (I guess with the new style of pop music and new rise in stars such as Eason, Nick Tse etc). Hacken once admitted that his lowpoint in his career was when he was hosting TVB Jade solid gold music program, and he was handing out all these awards to artists, yet his songs seem to have been forgotten at the time.

But the last 3 years or so, he's come back with a big bang, winning all kinds of awards and holding joint music concerts with Alan Tam. What happened? Is there a story behind Hacken's success story? Was Alan helping Hacken in promoting his popularity again?

i think hacken started his big comeback when his concert was really successful, the feb. 2001 concert with the HK orchestra. i think the CD sales 4 the concert broke a record!

then i think hacken started doing more shows 4 tvb, like hosting the Miss HK pageant, which helped boost his popularity....then he kinda changed his image a little, he worked out more, dressed differently (haha, i prefer the natural, casual hacken, though!), participated in more functions...

in jan. 2002 he released a new songs+compilation CD, and i think the sales were good (?)....then he had a concert that was very successful, where he also danced & did some other stuff ppl didn't expect.

at about that time, Legal Entanglement is aired in HK, & earned high ratings!!

2002 was also world cup yr, so hacken wrote & sang a song, Victory related 2 soccer, which was very popular and tvb used it as the world cup song. then the Tall Girl song also got very popular...by now hacken's in so many functions & is very very popular! his CD let's celebrate released in june (?) also sold very well, i think...hacken also hosted the Miss HK pageant again, but only part of it, w/ Miriam and jerry lam.

at about october or nov., his song 'ngoi but sik sau' got very popular & he also had a mini-concert. then in nov & dec, he won many awards 4 his songs, and also 1 for one of the favorite characters in tvb series.

then in 2003 he won the most popular male singer award!!!

THEN afterwards, he started working w/ alan on the 'left lun, right lee' concerts! so don't be mistaken that it was alan that helped him become popular again, though it's true that alan is a good friend of hacken & has helped him out a lot in the past, always encouraging him!! =)

Also, apparently (according to my mum) Hacken use to be very big headed and well 'up himself' (i'm not sure what the word is but...) like at the very beginning when he first came out he thought he was better than others cause he won some awards.
But not sure what happened after that, guess he got his attitude and act together and started hosting TVB shows and doing some TVB series. I remember him saying that he had a concert in 95 (was it? can't remmber) which went pretty well then decided to have another one 2 years (or was it one?) later and like he had lots of empty seats.

i'm not sure if i'm right bout this info, so if anyone knows the clear version feel free to correct me (i'm not quite sure what happened anyway)

He had a concert in 1993 which was very well-received. So when he decided to have another one in 1995, he was confident that it would do well. However, only half of the tickets were sold. It was highly demoralising for him and he said those 10 concerts, 10 days, were the most disappointing days in his career. With Alan's encouragement and his own optimism, Hacken branched into other fields like acting in TVB dramas, hosting beauty pageants, music programmes eg JSG, soccer programmes etc. He hope that all these will allow him to reach out to a wider audience. At the same time, he also reflected on his own attitude. His hard work paid off when he finally picked up the courage to have 2 concerts in conjunction with Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. (He had a phobia of concerts after 1995). The concerts were an unexpected success and it grew from 4 concerts and was a huge morale booster for him. The concerts CDs, VCDs also had high sales and with that, Hacken went back to singing.

In 2002, he had his solo concert and this concert was a rousing success. The CDs, VCDs, DVDs had high sales and gained him the awards of IFPI Bestselling Male Singer and IFPI Bestselling Album (HK). His show, LE also had high ratings at a time, when TVB ratings were in a slump, further stamping his popularity. June was world cup mth and Hacken was the ambassador for TVB, singing the themesong and hosting the programmes. During this time, his exposure rate and brought to an all-time high and this was followed by Oi But Sek Sau and Gou Mui, two highly popular songs. The rest, as they say, is history.

May I add that the 2 concerts with the Philharmonic Orchestra were also not planned. The Orchestra originally wanted to hold it with Alan who was not free at that time. Alan recommended Hacken and it turned out to be a roaring success. Besides Alan, Hacken also have the blessings of a number of other HK artistes such as Ah Lek, Andy Lau and Eric Tsang. Andy Lau was reported to have helped paid for the flowers in Hacken's concert (I don't know why this is so, I thought the recording company should have paid for all these decorations and props.)Ah Lek was said to have bought all remaining tickets to his concert (I don't know which one or whether he needed to do that in the end). Hacken's recording company was also unwilling to produce a CD for Hacken's concert thinking that it will not sell. Hacken proved them wrong when his CDs sold like hotcakes.

Yeah...i watched this video produced by TVB called Hong Xing Hui about Hacken's career. These stars were asked to give their opinions of Hacken and all spoke well of his character. To them, he deserves every bit of his success today.

Its not flowers. Its fireworks. The record company had not allocated much of a budget for Hacken's 2002 concert, but Andy felt that no concert shd do without fireworks and so he offered to sponsor the fireworks display for that 4 concerts. Haha...and when Hacken's concert turned out to be a roaring success, increasing from 4 to 6 shows, Andy joked to Hacken "if u continue adding shows, I'll go bankrupt! (from paying for the fireworks display) Hehe...

Ah Lek was said to have bought all remaining tickets to his concert (I don't know which one or whether he needed to do that in the end).

This is for the 2001 Philharmonic concert. Hacken's tickets were sold out, no doubt, but there will still some single seats in the concert which could be filled. Afterall, we go to concerts with companions. So Ah Lek bought up these remaining tickets.

Yeah...the company was unwilling to produce the live recording discs of Hacken's 2001 concert, but Hacken was adamant on it and had a highly-publicised spat with Universal, during which he threated to leave the company. Many celebrity pals like Alan also helped him talk to the company and eventually Universal produced the discs, which sold like hotcakes as u said, and proved Universal wrong.

i think he used 2 be a very famous singer & he's the man that wore the speedo during the miss hk pageant 2003, right?

good 4 hacken 4 having such good friends! also good that he changed 4 the better, though he may have been arrogant in the start of his career, haha! but any1 know exactly when he started 2 change 4 the better?

but according 2 hacken in an magazine interview in june 2003, he says he doesn't think he was arrogant back then, just that ppl thought he was (though after his friends also told him that he should change his attitude, he tried 2 change so that ppl wouldn't think he was arrogant or stuck-up)...is hacken just in denial about this? haha ...but i think the media also must have exagerrated his arrogant attitude somewhat, since they always exagerrate every negative thing about artists!

Nat Chan...a very confident man. During an interview, Hacken pondered whether Eric and Nat liked him because Alan influenced all his friends to like Hacken. (Eric, Nat and Alan are an influential trio in HK, with the nickname Fu Luk Sou). So the reporter asked Nat for his response and Nat noted that he's a person not easy to get along with and so its very hard for him to like a person, much less get influenced by others. He said he liked Hacken because from the bottom of his heart and not because of any other factors. Eric also said that Hacken is one who listens to advice and works on it. He noted that in spite of Alan helping Hacken, it ultimately boils down on Hacken himself to achieve success and Hacken did it.

I think its after 1995 concerts that be began to get feedback from others and reflected on his behaviour. As Phil said, Hacken's success as a person today is because he has been on the other end of it. After having won and lost, he treasures his current opportunities even more than ever. This is also Alan's wish for Hacken.

Its not about denial. Hacken has always been a frank and straightforward person and speaks his mind. He admits that success did get into his head, but he was just being himself and saw nothing wrong with it at that time. It was only when pple told him about what they thought abt him that he began to reflect on his behaviour and change his attitude for the better. Today, Hacken is still that frank person but he is notably more restrained, cos he does not want history to repeat itself. IMO, Hacken's frankness is good in the sense that it makes him more real, unlike other celebrities who put on a false front. The pt on the press is right...HK paparazzi have a bad reputation and lack professional ethics.

hmm... a few good points there... but no. Hacken's drop in popularity had NOTHING to do with new artists like eason... and etc cause eason didn't come out till 96 and hacken started downfall before that... i think (correct me if i'm wrong) but yeah... it was something like... Hacken was very showoff... poor unmodest attitude that was bad. (remember he said loudly to people that he was gonna get the most popular male singer in 2 yrs... ) he also dated a girl from the media, which kept the media quiet from critcising his poor attitudes and stuff. After they broke up, the media slammed reports criticisizing Hacken about a thousand things, making his image really bad...

As a result, we can see the hacken today is not only one of the most talented singers, he IS the most humble artist because he's been through the opposite end of that.

His popularity dipped partly because of the 4 Heavenly Kings. I think it was a promotion gimmick at that time - to promote 4 heavenly kings to replace the two superstars - Alan and Leslie who announced that they would not take part in any prize giving ceremonies anymore. But I felt it brought the Hong Kong music industry down because except for Jacky Cheung, the rest of the heavenly kings couldn't sing professionally. Even Andy Lau, Hacken's good friend also said that he was partly responsible for Hacken's downfall at that time.
